Lateral entrainment rate in shallow cumuli: Dependence on dry air sources and probability density functions

چکیده
[1] Entrainment processes in convective clouds often occur stochastically and entrainment rate estimates depend on the distance from the cloud from which the dry air is entrained. However, no observational studies exist on either the distance dependence or probability density function of entrainment rate, hindering understanding and the parameterization of convection. Here entrainment rate in cloud cores is estimated using a recently developed mixing fraction approach that is applied to in situ aircraft measurements of cumuli from the RACORO field program. The results are used to examine, for the first time, probability density functions of entrainment rate and their dependence on the distance from the edge of the cloud core from which the dry air is entrained. The estimated entrainment rate decreases when the dry air is entrained from increasing distance from the edge of the cloud core; this is because the air farther from the edge of the cloud core is drier than the neighboring air that is within the humid shell around the cumulus cloud core. Probability density functions of entrainment rate vary with the distance and height above the cloud-base, and all are well fitted by lognormal distributions. The implications of the results for convection parameterizations are discussed. Citation: Lu, C., Y. Liu, S. Niu, and A. M. Representing effects of aqueous phase reactions in shallow cumuli in global models
Aqueous phase reactions are important, sometimes dominant (e.g., for SO2), pathways for the oxidation of air pollutants at the local and/or global scale. In many current chemical transport models (CTMs), the transport and aqueous reactions of chemical species are treated as split processes, and the subgrid-scale heterogeneity between cloudy and environmental air is not considered. Here using la...

This paper focuses on the variability in entrainment rate in individual cumulus clouds using the entrainment rate estimated on the scale of 5 m in 186 shallow cumulus clouds from eight aircraft flights, using in situ observations from the RACORO field campaign (the routine atmospheric radiation measurement aerial facility clouds with low optical water depths optical radiative observations) over...
متن کاملTransient Nonlinear Vibration of Randomly Excited Cylindrical Shallow Panels in Non Aging Viscous Medium
In this paper, the nonlinear transient vibration of a cylindrical shallow panel under lateral white noise excitation is studied. The panel is in contact with a non aging viscoelastic medium. Since the external load is a time varying random wide band process, deterministic and conventional approaches cannot be used. Instead, the evolution of the probability density function of the response is in...

متن کاملResponses of Shallow Cumulus Convection to Large-Scale Temperature and Moisture Perturbations: A Comparison of Large-Eddy Simulations and a Convective Parameterization Based on Stochastically Entraining Parcels
Responses of shallow cumuli to large-scale temperature/moisture perturbations are examined through diagnostics of large-eddy simulations (LESs) of the undisturbed Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological Experiment (BOMEX) case and a stochastic parcel model. The perturbations are added instantaneously and allowed to evolve freely afterward. The parcel model reproduces most of the changes in th...
